Most of its Sahrawi Bedouin inhabitants fled the Moroccan and Mauritanian invasion of Western Sahara (then known as Spanish Sahara), and Mauritania's annexation of the area into Tiris al-Gharbiyya (rescinded in 1979). They are presently in the refugee camps of Tindouf, Algeria.
