Kingsolver's best yet  April 27, 2011

This new textbook by Barbara Kingsolver has a definite place in my list of the top 5 novels of this year. It consists of three interlocked tales set in the Appalachians. The chapters switch focus from one set of characters to the next. Even though the characters from each story never interact directly, by the end you can feel the ways in which they're all connected. I highly recommend reading this cheap textbook if you enjoy laid back novels about real humans. I also recommend getting the audio book of Prodigal Summer, narrated by Kingsolver herself.

Prodigal Summer: 5 out of 5 stars based on 1 user reviews.

Summary

Barbara Kingsolver's fifth novel is a hymn to wildness that celebrates the prodigal spirit of human nature, and of nature itself. It weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives amid the mountains and farms of southern Appalachia. Over the course of one humid summer, this novel's intriguing protagonists face disparate predicaments but find connections to one another and to the flora and fauna with which they necessarily share a place.

In a beautiful hymn to wildness, Kingsolver celebrates the prodigal spirit of human nature and of nature itself. Over the course of one humid summer, as the urge to procreate takes over the countryside, the novel's characters find their connections to one another in the forested mountains of southern Appalachia.
