MAGGOTS IN MY SWEET POTATOES: Women Doing Time is the first in a photojournalistic series that addresses the social issues of child abuse and neglect, homelessness, incarceration, and the special needs of women behind bars. Author Susan Madden Lankford, while interviewing and photographing the homeless on the streets of downtown San Diego, became deeply aware of the cycles of America's disenfranchised-on and off drugs, in and out of jail, on and off the streets. This led to a new mission-to follow her subjects behind bars. Granted access to a San Diego women's detention center, Lankford began photographing within its walls and speaking with candor and compassion with inmates and staff. Her interviews and striking images became the prizewinning MAGGOTS IN MY SWEET POTATOES, an in-depth and illuminating look at the lives of incarcerated women.
