The Giving Tree  April 26, 2011

This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offer an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. The boy is not meant to be an example of good behavior - any child can see that. It is a story about how to give with all your heart. The boy is the only thing the tree ever loved. This story would only be tragic if the tree decided not to love fully and unconditionally. The textbook has a valuable lesson for children and adults; it is about sharing and caring for others.
