Knowing More about Sustainable Cocoa : The Dutch Knowledge Base

The Netherlands take up a central position in the international cocoa chain, especially in transporting and processing cocoa beans. Despite the economic importance of cocoa, a solid cocoa knowledge base seems to be lacking. The momentum of sustainability currently present in the Dutch cocoa chain offers a good opportunity to examine the status of knowledge availability, development and applicability. What knowledge do actors working on a more sustainable chain lack? Where do they get their knowledge from and who are their partners? What knowledge is being developed and how is it being applied? By providing the answers to these questions this study aims to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the Dutch knowledge base and provide recommendations on improving it.
