Summary

Drawings from Edward Lear's Egyptian travels are gathered and matched with travelogues in this never-before-published collection. Learfamous for his nonsense poetry and prose as well as his landscape paintingstraveled extensively in Europe, the Middle East, and India, and documented his sojourns in what has been described as "poetical topography." However, Lear never fulfilled his intention to document his adventures in Egypt, where he traveled during the later half of the 19th century. Compiling a selection of his most picturesque and informative watercolors from these voyages and uniting them with extracts from his travel diary as well as quotations from his poetry, this retrospective account offers a charming view of Lear as a travel artist.
